THE BOLT OF LIGHTNING SCULPTURE
The Bolt of Lightning sculpture
stands as a striking memorial at
Omega Warrington, honouring the
former US Air Force base at RAF
Burtonwood. D Morgan delivered
the construc琀椀on and installa琀椀on
of the artwork, con琀椀nuing a
seventeen-year presence across
the Omega development.
D Morgan has maintained a con琀椀nuous presence
at Omega since 2008, delivering nineteen projects
across the development. The Bolt of Lightning
sculpture required full civils and installa琀椀on works,
including drainage, duc琀椀ng, paving, reinforced
concrete plinth construc琀椀on, hard and so昀琀
landscaping and the 昀椀nal placement of the artwork.
The sculpture depicts a P-38 Lightning aircra昀琀
and commemorates those who served at RAF
Burtonwood, the former US Air Force base on
which Omega now sits. Standing 22.5 metres high
and weighing over twelve tonnes, it was assembled
o昀툀ine before being installed using a fully engineered
tandem li昀琀 during a night-琀椀me road closure. High
winds across the planned weekend window required
rapid replanning. Follow-on works, including ligh琀椀ng,
grou琀椀ng and landscaping, brought the eighteenweek programme to a successful close.
