A57 MOTTRAM LINK ROADS
The Mo琀琀ram Moor Link Road is a
key part of the A57 improvements,
designed to cut conges琀椀on and improve
safety along this busy Trans-Pennine
route. Delivered by Na琀椀onal Highways
with Balfour Bea琀琀y and D Morgan, it
strengthens the connec琀椀on between
Manchester and She昀케eld to support
cleaner, more reliable journeys.
The exis琀椀ng A57 through Mo琀琀ram Moor was never
built for the tra昀케c it carries today, with more than
25,000 vehicles using the route daily. Its collision
record and air-quality concerns underline the need
for a modern link road.
D Morgan has been appointed to deliver vital civil
engineering works, including large-scale cut and 昀椀ll,
on-site rock processing, carriageway prepara琀椀on,
PVD installa琀椀on, piling mats, retaining structures, a
new underpass and bridge works. Careful sequencing
is essen琀椀al across the complex programme,
par琀椀cularly in areas of deep excava琀椀on and variable
ground. By processing more than 200,000 tonnes
of rock on site, the team reduces haulage, supports
sustainability and ensures consistent material quality.
The new route will improve safety, ease pressure on
local roads and create a more dependable connec琀椀on
across the region.

SAFETY NEED
The original A57 through Mo琀琀ram Moor has a
historic record of 105 collisions, reinforcing the
need for a safer route.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
The corridor sits within an Air Quality Management
Area for NO₂, with modelling showing the scheme will
signi昀椀cantly reduce exceedances.
MAJOR EARTHWORKS
Over 300,000m3 of cut and 昀椀ll and more than
200,000 tonnes of on-site rock processing shape
the new alignment.
STRUCTURES & NEW ROUTE
Works include 8,500+ PVDs, a new 200m underpass,
mul琀椀ple bridges including the River Etherow crossing,
and more than 3 km of new carriageway.
